01 / Watch with understanding

Watch. Pause on a word. Understand.

Explore Dutch subtitles on YouTube, Netflix and Videoland just like words on a page.

  1. Play the video and follow it in the transcript. Underlined words are not yet known.
  2. Click a word: the video pauses and its meaning opens.
  3. Press “Study” to save the word, or click “unknown” to mark it known. Close the menu to keep watching.

    Any Dutch page, or a video with Dutch subtitles. Click a word to see what it means and keep it for review.

What is Leesje?

Leesje is a browser extension for learning Dutch through what you read and watch. It helps you understand words, save them with their sentences and return to them in reviews.

Where do I get Leesje?

Leesje is coming soon to the Chrome Web Store, for Chrome on a computer. Leave your email and we’ll write once when it’s there. Until then, you can try it in the demo on this page.

Do I need to know Dutch already?

You can explore with the Dutch you have. Short, familiar texts are a good starting point, and a short optional assessment marks words you likely know already. Leesje supports reading and vocabulary practice; it isn’t a complete language course.

Which video sites work?

YouTube, Netflix and Videoland, for videos that have Dutch subtitles. If a video has no Dutch subtitles, Leesje tells you.

What gets saved with a word?

The word, its meaning and the sentence it came from. Your flashcards keep that context, so the word has something familiar attached to it.

Is there a phone app?

Not yet. Leesje for iPhone and Android is coming soon, but it isn’t released. It will let you review your flashcards and read Dutch you copy, with your words synced from the extension. Leave your email and we’ll write once when it’s in the App Store and on Google Play.

How does the free period work?

You get 30 free days when you create your account. No payment details are needed, and the free period never turns into a paid plan by itself.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes. Cancelling stops future renewals and your access continues until the end of the paid period. See the refund policy for details.

Is this demo connected to my account?

No. This page uses a few sample words to show the experience. Nothing is added to your word collection, and the demo resets when you reload the page.
